Greg Falkovich – Three Part Lecture Series

SCGP guest, Dr. Greg Falkovich from the Weizmann Institute of Science, will present a three part lecture series, both in person and virtual.

To participate virtually:

Thursday, September 16th, 2021

11AM- 12PM – SCGP Lecture Hall – Room 102

Lecture 1:

Thermodynamic and statistical entropy. Asymptotic equipartition. Information as a choice. Entropy as the rate of information transfer. Two greatest code inventions: alphabet and positional numeral system. Entropy of the language and the genetic code.

Tuesday, September 21st, 2021

11AM- 12PM – SCGP Lecture Hall – Room 102

Lecture 2:

Mutual Information. Hypothesis testing and relative entropy. Second of law of thermodynamics made trivial. Distribution from information. Exorcising Maxwell demon and Landauer principle.

Tuesday, September 28th, 2021

11AM- 12PM – SCGP Lecture Hall – Room 102

Lecture 3:

Flies and spies. Information is money and life: proportional gambling and phenotype switching. Learning by forgetting – renormalization group. Quantum information: uncertainty principle in the entropic form, entanglement entropy. Black-hole entropy and the Bekenstein bound. Informational nature of physics.
