Abstract: Gubser, Hartnoll, Horowitz and I proposed the holographic superconductor as a model where one might be able to learn something about strongly correlated many-body systems using gauge-gravity duality. I will review the motivation behind the holographic superconductor. I will also discuss the phase diagram and optical conductivity that follow from the construction.
