Late Prof. C.N. “Frank” Yang: 1922-2025

Chen-Ning Yang left an indelible impression on the development of physics that is as strong in the second quarter of the twenty-first century as when he retired from Stony Brook, twenty-seven years ago. For this meeting, we have asked a group of physicists to assess the influence of these ideas today.
The symposium will focus on the status and prospects of areas where Yang’s work helped shape our current understanding. His contributions famously bridged gaps between high energy and condensed matter physics and between physics and mathematics. We are looking forward to discussions of new roles for symmetries, gauge, global and discrete, of new ideas in particle physics, statistical mechanics and integrable systems. Concepts introduced by Yang inspired major themes in particle and nuclear experiments, in cold atom arrays, in quantum information and in machine learning. We believe an event bringing together researchers in such a range of areas can lead to a useful exchange of ideas, which will be the most fitting tribute to Frank’s memory.
