Entanglement is the property of quantum states that most clearly distinguishes them from classical states. Entanglement is responsible for the fascinating effects in the low-temperature states of matter and the phase transitions between them that are the subject of much research in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics research. Entanglement is also what makes understanding the structure of strongly correlated states so challenging. In quantum information theory, entanglement is the essential resource on which the algorithms of quantum information processing rely. Unlocking the power of quantum computation requires us to understand better than we currently do how to protect entangled states from decoherence for sufficiently long times. In high energy physics, entanglement is believed to be the key to probing the nature of quantum effects in black hole physics and is likely to be an essential ingredient in a future theory of quantum gravity in which space and its geometry are emergent features rather than a priori given structure. In recent years numerous researchers from a wide range of disciplines in physics, mathematics, and computer science have developed tools to quantify and analyze entanglement. This program will bring together physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists who are leaders in entanglement research on topics including AdS/CFT correspondence, matrix product and tensor network states, quantum information and quantum entropy, and new models and results in quantum spin chains.
