RTG/SCGP Graduate Workshop on the Birational Complexity of Algebraic Varieties: December 5-9, 2022

Application

This instructional workshop, aimed at graduate students familiar with basic algebraic geometry, will introduce attendees to rationality problems, measures of irrationality, and groups of birational automorphisms such as the Cremona group. The SCGP will host a research workshop Birational Complexity of Algebraic Varieties the following week (December 12-16, 2022, SCGP).

The Graduate workshop will revolve around four series of lectures:

Olivier Debarre on rationality problems;
John Ottem on curves in algebraic varieties;
Julia Schneider on the Cremona group; and
Brooke Ullery and Ruijie Yang on measures of irrationality.

Some additional events will be announced.

Students interested in attending the school should fill out the online application here. Please have your advisor or a faculty member send a very brief statement in support of your application at contact@scgp.stonybrook.edu. At that time you can indicate whether you are interested in also attending the research workshop, but due to limitations of space we cannot guarantee a workshop slot for every attendee at the school.

Successful applicants will receive housing, breakfast, and lunch for the school. We encourage participants to secure their travel funds, but will consider requests for travel funding in the application.
