About the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics:
The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics (SCGP) is an endowed research center devoted to furthering fundamental knowledge in mathematics and theoretical physics, especially knowledge at the interface of these two disciplines. The Center believes that much progress can be made in each domain, mathematics and theoretical physics, by serious, substantive interchanges between mathematicians and physicists around fundamental questions of common interest. The Center is housed in its own LEED certified building, connected by a sky bridge to the Math and Physics Departments, and includes several lecture spaces, a Café on the second level and an art gallery on the first. The SCGP is comprised (at full capacity) of six senior faculty (currently the Center has four), 12 junior faculty (postdocs), and 20 visitors at any one time in addition to a Deputy Director and an administrative/IT staff of eight.
About the Position of Director:
- The SCGP Director oversees the research activities of the Center, including the recruiting and hiring of senior faculty (three in mathematics and three in physics, currently two in each field) and the selection and mentoring of postdocs (six in mathematics and six in physics for three year terms).
- Together with the Deputy Director, the Director oversees the Center’s visitor programs and workshops, which bring over one thousand scientists each year to the Center for visits of one week up to an entire academic year.
- The Director is responsible for facilitating and maintaining robust interactions between the Center and the rest of the University. Of particular importance are the interactions between the scientific activities at the Center and in the Mathematics and Physics Departments, including those in the Institutes founded by C. N. Yang in 1965 and John Milnor in 1990.
- The Director is also responsible for integrating the more general/public interest and cultural activities at the Center into the mosaic of overall activities on the SBU campus.
- The Director oversees all of the Center’s operations and finances, including the Center’s endowment, its Café (which is run by a Chef and two additional managing partners and serves breakfast and lunch in addition to special events and catering), the Center’s building that houses all its activities, rental housing for visitors, and the Art Program, which has its own Curator and faculty advisory board. The Director is assisted by a Deputy Director, a Chief Administrative Officer, and a support staff of approximately seven who are responsible for housing, travel, office and IT needs, and reimbursements for visitors.
- Together with the Deputy Director, the Director is responsible for applying for government grants for partial support for the Center’s activities. The Director also works with the University’s Advancement team on other external funding opportunities for the Center.
- The Director reports to the Provost of Stony Brook University and to the Center’s Board of Trustees and must communicate effectively with faculty and academic leaders in the local and broader Mathematics and Physics communities.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Mathematics or Theoretical Physics.
- Proven research record as a scientific leader.
- Record of significant academic leadership and achievement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with strategic planning and program assessment.
- Experience with planning, organizing, and overseeing research programs.
- Evidence of working effectively with varied constituents.
- Experience with securing and/or administering external funding.
Anticipated start date: September 1, 2016. The term of Director of the SCGP is expected to be five years and the incumbent may assume a tenured position in the mathematics or physics department at Stony Brook University
